“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
The inspirational quote above is attributed to Helen Keller, the great American author and political activist; and it seems Americans have heeded her rallying call to volunteer. Records by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, show that one in four American adults spends some time volunteering. Up to 62.8 million people volunteered for an organization at least once, spending around 50 hours on volunteer activities, between September 2013 and September 2014.
With non-profits needing all the assistance they can get, this opens up a wide range of volunteering opportunities. Volunteering opportunities can be found among religious, educational, youth-service related, community service organizations etc. Depending n the goals of the organization, volunteers can engage in collecting, preparing, serving food, fundraising drives, mentoring or tutoring etc.
Helping out others is an intrinsic part of most humans. We volunteer our time, expertise, cash, in some way, to different charities. But for some, giving money isn't enough; they prefer to get involved with volunteering. At last count there were over 1,280 volunteer opportunities in and around San Diego; everything from reading to at-risk teens to mentoring small business owners.
In the spirit of Christmas and giving, will you consider donating some of your time to these three nonprofit organizations that serve Santee and the surrounding communities?
Santee Food Bank
Established in 1984, the food bank provides food assistance to low- and middle-income Santee residents. Under the inspiring tag line “We are neighbors helping neighbors,” volunteers are committed to ensuring that nobody in the community goes hungry.
The food bank can use the help of anyone who can work for up to three hours at a time, sorting donations, filling bags of food, helping clients carry the bags to their cars etc. if you'd like to donate your time, email them at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
This group aims to put smiles on the faces of families with food and toys, every holiday season. It's been going strong for over 60 years now, thanks to volunteers like you. Their events consist of holding food drives to collect food supplies, creating awareness and serving families through its holiday program, senior outreach program and emergency fund.

San Diego River Park Foundation
Are you fed up with seeing our beautiful San Diego river clogged up with trash? Then volunteer three hours, this Wednesday with the San Diego River Park Foundation. Dubbed the River Rescuers, teams of volunteers attack the smaller trash sites along the river, that require special attention. With your help, our waterways will soon be free of debris and rubbish.
