Great Trails & Outdoor Areas In The Santee Area

It's a no-brainer that many people consider fall to be the best season. Whether it's the explosion of color in the trees, Halloween, festivals (loads of them), apple harvests; fall just seems packed with all kinds of fun.

I enjoy fall for a slightly different reason; it's the perfect time of the year to enjoy the great outdoors. The stunning colors of falling leaves and the cool crisp air make being outdoors now a delightful experience. Whether you bike, walk or hike, you look forward to fall to get those miles in, because walks can go for longer and are more enjoyable in cooler weather.

Have fun Hiking

Exploring the great outdoors is also an activity the whole family can enjoy, even toddlers (as long as you've got a bike trailer in tow). Hiking in fall, offers more advantages than just seeing pretty leaves; it's also an ideal workout solution for when the gym gets boring.

San Diego is home to many great trails stretching from the mountains down to the ocean. The main one, the San Diego River Trail, runs right through Santee, Lakeside and beyond. With the constant improvement of the Santee area, a new section of the trail was opened to the public in April, 2015.

The Walker Preserve Trail

The Walker Preserve Trail runs parallel to the San Diego River and stretches for over two miles. With easy access from the North Magnolia Avenue exit, it winds through residential areas all the way to the Lakeside Baseball Park.

Spread over 107-acres, the trail is ideal for hiking, bicycling and horseback riding. It also ticks all the boxes for what makes a great trail for kids: short trail options with many branching trails (every 0.5 miles), and many different things to catch their attention.

When the trail was planned, it was supposed to set a high standard for others, and so far, it's done so. How many trails do you know that have a bike repair station? Complete with bike stand, air compressor, and even tools? And that's not all, it also has:

    • the requisite informational kiosks.

    • interpretive signs with information on the local habitat, wildlife and history of the area.

    • picnic tables with a gazebo.

    • drinking fountains for both humans and dogs.

Something For Everyone

The trail isn't for just hikers, birdwatchers are welcome and they have the chance to spot a few protected species. Walker Preserve covers over 100 acres of dry and riparian habitat, including sections devoted to conservation. Protected bird species here include the Southwestern willow flycatcher, the least Bell’s vireo and the California gnatcatcher.

This trail is popular with trail runners; hikers and walkers can enjoy the magnificent views along the trail. With ample curbside parking on Magnolia Avenue, visitors can park on the street and just walk on to Walker Preserve.

When a trail that ticks all the boxes, there's really no excuse to stay indoors this fall. Come alone, come with the family, Santee's Walker Preserve Trail has something for everyone to enjoy.

When most people think of San Diego, images of sun and sea come to mind. But with the ever-expanding trail system, now we can add easily accessible, lush wooded trails to that description. Pop down to Santee and experience what we are talking about.
