Since writer James Truslow Adams coined the phrase the American Dream in 1931, it has been interpreted in different ways across generations. It used to be that couples rented their first apartment, for around two years, while they save up for the down payment on a house. But since the recession, couples are taking longer to get the down payment and move from that apartment. Between 2005 and 2008, the percentage of young people owning a home dropped by about four percentage points, to 39%.
