It started with just a hint of a slightly cooler breeze, then we had the tree lighting ceremony in November. But now December is finally here and the countdown to Christmas has officially begun!
Gift giving, drinking eggnog, the gingerbread house, spending time with family; we all look forward to the holidays with its cheer and goodwill. But between the festivities, family time and gift-giving, lets think of those who can't enjoy the holiday cheer.
Families, all over the country, are struggling to put food on the table and afford the basic necessities. A CNN Money report claims low income families spend up 72% of their income on shelter. Low income families can also spend up to 10% of their income on heating their homes. With all those expenses, how can they even think of presents?
Good thing Santa has an ear to the ground and with his heart full of cheer, he's come up with a solution.
The Santee Santas Association
In Santee, the Santee Santas have been at the forefront of bringing comfort and joy to members of our community, during the holiday season. Determined to spread goodwill, the all-volunteer organization distributes toys, food and puts smiles on faces every year.
Every year, they hold a special holiday children's toy and food drive. And it's not just kids; the Association's senior outreach program also ensures Santee seniors who live alone or in senior care facilities get into the Christmas spirit too.
Backed by a selfless team of volunteers, the Santee Santas has served local residents for the past 60 years! But this non-profit can't work all this magic by itself.
Donations and Sponsors
Every year, they reach out to businesses and individuals in the community to aid, assist and support in any way they can. Just last Monday, the Pathways Church hosted the fourth annual Waddle and Trot 5K Fun Run, with part of the proceeds going to benefit the Santee Santas and the Santee Food Bank.
This year, businesses around Santee, El Cajon, La Mesa and Lakeside, will be hosting toy and food collection boxes for the Santee Santas. Through these donations from organizations and members of the community, the Santee Santas can provide toys, clothes and food to families in need.
There are also opportunities for volunteering. If you'd like to volunteer your time, click here to visit and register on their site. Their volunteers come from all walks of life, including school district employees, firefighters, City of Santee staff, and many more. They are all bound by a common cause; to reach out, help someone in need and spread a little holiday cheer.
This holiday season, can you do something for the Santee Santas? Let's come together and help others this holiday season. Lets celebrate what Christmas is really about; peace, love and charity.
