Summer activities tend to fall into one of two groups; the ones you enjoy as an adult and the types only the kids will have fun doing. One of the few exceptions that everyone can enjoy is a trip to the beach. In many cases, no summer would be complete without a visit to the beach.
But, what happens when you just don't feel like making that drive? Take Santee, for example; the closest beach is down in La Jolla, a 30 minute drive away. The point of the beach is to cool off, not to get heated driving down there!
But if you're in the Santee area, there is an alternative spot where you can stay cool without driving down to the ocean. Only four minutes outside the Town Center Community Park, is a place referred to as East County's best-kept aquatic adventure area.
As part of the Town Center Community Park, which includes the local Y and a Sportsplex USA complex, the Santee Aquatic Center is a unique chill spot. At the Aquatic Center, there is something for everyone; from toddlers to the grandparents.
Fun for All Ages
With a 25 x 23 meter pool, there is enough space for everyone to jump in and have fun. Kids can play here or in the activity pool with a play structure, kids play equipment and a spiral water slide.
For beginners, there are swimming lessons held in small groups, available all year round. The smaller classes allow instructors ample time to coach new swimmers individually.
I'm sure you've heard that water aerobics are a fun way to work out and still stay cool. The Center has a multitude of exercise classes for different activity levels. Some of the popular ones are:
- Aqua Zumba – This gives you an intense cardio and body-toning workout. With stretching, twisting and loads of splashing, you'll have fun while working up a sweat.
- Water Tabata – With three different intensity levels, Water Tabata helps with muscle strengthening using high intensity interval training.
- Aqua Fitness classes - Designed for people with joint pain, limited mobility and arthritis; it offers a great workout for the elderly.
All classes are led by highly trained instructors and the water is kept at the right temperature all year round. See? There is something for everyone.
Worried about Safety?
Don't be, the Santee Aquatic Center has you covered. Using an age and color-coded wristband system, the lifeguards categorize swimmers by their proficiency, and are always on the lookout.
Every April, the Center also organizes a three-hour Drowning Prevention Month event to teach safe swimming, CPR and increase awareness about drowning accidents.
Parking and Storage
For your valuables, the Center has locker rooms for you to store stuff, if you have your own padlock. If you don't, you can leave them in the mini-lockers at the front desk. As the Aquatic Center is part of the larger Cameron Family YMCA, there's ample parking available.
With classes catering for ages 12 – 99, bring the whole family here; they'll absolutely love it.
Make the most of this hot summer and enjoy a proper splash around. Come and cool off in the one place nobody will bat an eye lid if you splash water ;-)
Stop by for a few hours and cool off. Who knows, you just might stay a while.
